• Tell the dispatcher the type of emergency, your name, address, phone number and cross street.
  • Listen to the dispatcher as they can provide you with immediate care instructions.
  • Write information like this on a card and keep near phone for babysitters.
  • Don't hang up until the dispatcher tells you to.
  • Turn a light on and have someone meet the ambulance.
  • Keep a clear path to the person who needs help.
  • Put all animals away.
  • Have the person's medical information including medical history and medications ready.
  • Nothing to eat or drink, as it might make the person sick or cause problems for the doctor.
  • Make the person as comfortable as possible.
  • Do not move an injured person or attempt to splint injuries.
  • Call back 911 immediately if there is any change in the persons condition.

Remember that when you dial 911 in Suffolk County, you also engage a Police Department response. Police Officers carry oxygen and an Automatic Defibrillation Unit.
